Antoni Gaudi was the visionary architect who sadly died in 1926 having been hit by a tram. Its said he was on his way to his daily confession when he was hit and sadly died.
Gaudi was the architect behind some of Barcelona's most famous landmarks, including La Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló, Casa Milà - La Pedrera, Casa Vicens and Park Güell.
These are some of Barcelona's most popular tourist attractions and with it, they attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to enjoy his remarkable talents. I say hundreds of thousands of visitors, the reality is its actually millions as La Sagrada Familia by its self is suggested to receive around 4.5 million visitors each year and that is actual paying visitors who pay to see the inside of the magnificent property. Its suggested that around 20,000,000 people visit each year just to see it and admire it from the outside.
La Sagrada Familia is still his final unfinished masterpiece. Its original completion date was expected to be 2026, but with covid delays and now funding has slowed, they have actually pushed back the expected date of completion and haven't actually got a date named anymore.
Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, the nickname of Casa Mila due to it looking like an open stone quarry receive around 1,000,000 visitors each per year that come to marvel at the properties unique designs. One of the incredible things about Gaudi properties is that both children and adults can enjoy them. Due to Gaudi's incredible mind and his process of including nature in his designs, the properties will also capture the minds of young ones due to the colours and textures used to bring the properties together. Whether its the shape of a door handle or the colour of a wall, kids find the properties fascinating as well and there aren't many architects that can bring families together to experience and enjoy quite like Gaudi could. Just imagine the kids arriving at Casa Batlló and seeing the multicoloured wall on the outside along with the shapes used. It will be like nothing they've seen before and that will capture their attention.
Casa Vicens, which is probably the least famous of the Gaudi properties in Barcelona that are open to the public and certainly not due to it being any less interesting is incredible to look at and always reminds me of a gingerbread house. For adults that is amazing to see in person, so just imagine that reaction through the eyes of a child seeing that in reality. A real house and then the colours and styles used in side.
Park Güell, the famous park in Barcelona receives an estimated 12,000,000 visitors each year, which is just quite incredible. During the summer months that work out to around 30,000 per day to enjoy this piece of outdoor art. Again, its a place to take the kids and for them to enjoy as well, with its incredible monumental zone, its gingerbread houses, its mosaic animals, its columns, it space and the famous staircase which offers incredible views of the city.
I think there is something quite special about a place that can genuinely entertain families. Not just where parents take kids to keep them occupied, but where the parents can genuinely enjoy themselves too, and that is what Gaudi has managed to go several times over.
This is one of the reasons why several of his properties have all been awarded with UNESCO World Heritage Status.
This goes to show that almost 100 years after Gaudi died, his properties and designs attract over 20,000,000 visitors to Barcelona each year and that means the revenue he generates for Barcelona is quite spectacular, with it feeding in to accommodation, local bars and restaurants, taxi services, gift shops and so many other ways.
Antoni Gaudi was a man that during his life created incredible properties with is amazing visions. Gaudi after his death now brings revenue to the local area from all over the world as tourists travel to see those properties to enjoy them in all their glory.
