Information About Casa Batlló History

The property was originally built by Emilio Sala Cortes, who also happened to be one of Antoni Gaudi’s architecture professors in 1877. However, the property was then purchased by Mr. Josep Batlló y Casanovas in 1903. Batllo, a well-known businessman and textile industrialist with several factories in Barcelona, commissioned Antoni Gaudi and gave him full creative freedom to do as he wished with the property and he finished the property in 1906.

Casa Batlló was sold by the Batlló family during the 1950’s and between then and the 1990’s the property had multiple owners until the 1990’s when the Bernat family purchased the property, and still own it to this day and have fully restored it to its glory.

In 1995, the family took the decision to open the property to the public in order that it could be enjoyed as part of the Gaudi collection. Casa Batlló is also listed by UNESCO World Heritage as part of the ‘Works of Gaudi’ and welcomes around 1,000,000 visitors per year and is another of Barcelona’s most highly rated cultural and tourist attractions.

• In 1962 Casa Batlló was named a "National Cultural Asset of Catalonia (BCIN)"
• In 1969 Casa Batlló was named a "Cultural Asset of Spain (BIC)"

The inside of Casa Batlló:

Antoni Gaudi didn't do anything normally. Everything was above and beyond to meet his standards and interior of Casa Batlló is no exception. Gaudi worked with some of the best artisans of the time bringing together a mixture of wrought iron, wood, stained glass, ceramic and stone ornaments, amongst other materials, to bring his vision together and to ensure the detail and quality was to his standard, which can be seen throughout the house. From the way the light pours through the stained glass windows, to the letters found on the doors leading to the various areas of the house. Gaudi, although using colours and textures throughout, always made sure the property was functional though.

Casa Batlló Interior & Facade

• Casa Batlló Facade

The Casa Batlló facade instantly shows its not a normal property. Covered in small pieces of broken ceramic tiles in shades of blue, green and mauve, the incredible colourful mosaic is meant to resemble an underwater world. The process is called 'trencadis' and is a signature style of Gaudi. The facade also features distinctive balconies that have been designed to look like masks or skulls and made out of intricate ironwork. The main balcony which has the nickname of the "bone balcony" actually resembles a jawbone! The roof also features colourful tiles to ensure it all flows.

• The Casa Batlló Entrance

The grand communal entrance hall located on the ground floor leads to what was the Batllo's own private entrance hall. Designed to transport you to an underwater environment theme and possibly inspired by Jules Verne's novel 20,000 leagues under the sea, the skylights resemble turtle shells and the vaulted walls have curved shapes to flow and they are accompanied by the magnificent wooden staircase and the smooth carved banister is meant to represent the backbone of a large animal as it raises up to the next floor.

• The Noble Floor Casa Batlló

The Noble Floor is next and is the heart of the house and of course, magnificent. The floor is home to what was Mr. Batllo's study and is home to an incredible mushroom-shaped fireplace! Next is the main living room of the house where you are greeted by an incredible window that takes centre stage of the room. The window looks down on Paseo de Gracia, which would have been incredibly important at the time as Paseo de Gracia was the place to be seen. The room is home to grand oak doors and an incredible wavy ceiling, again with its resemblance to an underwater land.

• Patio of Lights

The Patio of Lights is an important part of the house as it helps to distribute air and light around the property. Gaudi found this space incredibly important and even extended the original plan to ensure it was a large enough space. The space is covered with incredible blue tiles to reflect the light and are varying tones of blue.

• Indoor Garden

The family's private dining room which is also located on The Noble Floor leads to a wonderful spacious private courtyard at the rear of the property, which meant it got a degree of privacy. The floor is paved with incredible tiles with pots to accompany to add decorative elements to the space.

• The Loft

The loft space is another incredible and unique space with its combination of aesthetics and practicality. Originally used as a service area for the tenants for such purposes as laundry and storage. Its again full of curved walls creating light and depth to the room and is meant to evoke the ribcage of an animal!

• The Casa Batlló Roof Terrace

Then there's the roof terrace of the property. A space that most visitors will likely recognise instantly as its one of the most famous areas of the property. The colours and the chimney stacks which instantly catch your gaze and cleverly designed to prevent backdraughts. The area is commonly referred to as the dragon's back due to the shapes and the flowing contours.
