About Barcelona Aquarium

Barcelona Aquarium, or to use its official name, the 'L'Aquarium de Barcelona', is a great day out. The aquarium currently holds the title for the largest Mediterranean-themed aquarium in the world!

The aquarium has multiple different setups which showcase different aquatic habitats, with some being Mediterranean and others based on the warmer tropical waters of the Caribbean. They've even got an area dedicated to poisonous tropical fish!

In total across the 21 areas there are around 11,000 animals from over 400 different species.

The aquarium also has an incredible 80-metre long glass tunnel that you can walk through and be surrounded by sharks, eels and stingrays amongst others!

Oh, and did we mention they also have penguins and most of us love penguins! They normally get fed around 11:30 and 16:30 so if you happen to be there around those times try and see feeding time!

Is Barcelona Aquarium Worth Visiting?

As one of Europe's largest Mediterranean aquarium's we definitely think so!

The aquarium is set up in multiple areas and includes 12 Mediterranean aquariums and 7 tropical ones. It offers visitors fun interactive and educational experiences to make visits more enjoyable.

The areas include:

  • The Oceanarium - a large tank with over 4m litres of water, home to sharks, rays, sunfish and other species.
  • Planeta Acqua - where you will find penguins, jellyfish, piranhas and others.
  • Tropical Aquariums - where you will find exotic fish and colourful coral reefs and sharks, amongst others.
  • Mediterranean Aquariums - where you will find underwater plants such as slimy algea and the fish that live naturally amongst it.
  • Underwater Tunnel - enjoy the 80-metre underwater tunnel that allows you to walk under the water and view the sea-life from a different angle! Watch the sharks swim straight past you!

Barcelona Aquarium Marine Life

The animals that live at the aquarium have been chosen to represent the different marine ecosystems you found around the world, which is one of the reasons they are separated so they can all live in their own natural habitats. Visitors can enjoy ecosystems from the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Caribbean as well as they icy Antarctic.

Barcelona Aquarium Education and Conservation

As well as being a popular tourist attraction, Barcelona Aquarium also runs an incredible conservation program. One of the programs they are famous for is there sea turtle rehabilitation centre, where the aquarium works with marine biologists and local veterinarians to rehabilitate sea turtles.

Barcelona Aquarium also run a clever educational program for visitors as they tour the centre. Using interactive exhibits, educational program guides and special signs located around the aquarium, there visitors can learn as they move around the aquarium.
