About Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site | Sant Pau Hospital
Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site was designed by the legendary Catalan architect Lluis Domènech i Montaner (who was also responsible for other UNESCO World Heritage Site's in Barcelona as well).
Domènech i Montaner was commissioned by the hospital board along with the executors of the late Pau Gil (a wealthy deceased benefactor who had left money in his will to build a modern new hospital in Barcelona).
The property is known by many different names including:
- 'Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site'
- 'Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau'
- 'Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau'
- 'Sant Pau Hospital'
Domènech i Montaner designed the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site as a group of pavilions and underground tunnels that were built on the site of an old medieval hospital. His original plan was for 48 pavilions, however only 27 were actually built and of those 27, 16 were according to his original Modernista plan.
Domènech i Montaner wanted to create a space to try and help patients spirits recover by incorporating architecture and natural beauty in the design. He used mosaic art, coloured roof tiles, intricate arches and other design aspects to try and bring a smile to the patients faces and warmth as they were on their road to recovery and each of the buildings would be dedicated to a different medical speciality.
Lluis Domènech i Montaner sadly passed away in December 1923. His son, Pere Domènech i Roura took over the project and finally completed it and in January 1930, King Alfonso XIII officially opened the hospital and it was named 'Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau'.
The Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site at Sant Pau Hospital was declared a Historic Artistic Monument in 1978 and was later awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1997 and remains as one of Barcelona's most popular tourist attractions.
Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau was used as a working hospital until 2009 at which point the hospital activities were moved to a new location due to it's ever increasing demand and needing more space. The Modernista buildings were then restored as the landmark and international centre that we know as the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site today.
The Main Pavilions
The Main Building
The main building is the entrance and offers an amazing facade. This is where the patients were admitted to the hospital. It is also where you will see the underground tunnel entrance points that connect the various pavilions and hospital wards that were used to transfer patients between the buildings.
Sant Salvador Pavilion
In the Sant Salvador Pavilion you will find a space used for exhibiting the history of medicine in Barcelona. A range of medical equipment and materials are in show, as well as architectural elements and models. This exhibit also shows the history of the hospitals heritage.
Sant Rafael Pavilion
The Sant Rafael Pavilion has a display that shows what the hospital looked like when it was built. It also includes old medical tools and the beds used at the time.
The Gardens
As well as the buildings, the Recinta Modernista Sant Pau also has a beautiful garden. Its suggested that Doménech i Montaner took inspiration from the garden city movement in the design and one of the purposes of the gardens was supposedly to grow medical plants which would have in turn been used for their medicinal purposes in the hospital on patients. Now the gardens are home to plants from all over the world.
