About Poble Espanyol

Poble Espanyol is a unique open-air enclosure in Barcelona that proudly shows the history of traditional villages across Spain and encompasses their cultures, their architecture and their traditions, and have created this fantastic space where people can come and visit.

Poble Espanyol was created in 1929 for the Barcelona Universal Exposition. The creators visited more than 1500 villages across the whole of Spain to take their inspiration and to bring a taste of Spain to this one unique location, showing the various cultures and traditions that exist across the country in one fabulous location.

Today, Poble Espanyol offers its visitors a taste of the Spanish heritage from those areas, along with architecture, art, live music, family activities and craft workshops run by the artisans that occupy the spaces.

Poble Espanyol is set over 49,000 m2 and lets you sample some of Spain's different cultures and traditions in this one fantastic location. You will find stalls selling the artisans products including ranges of glass, leather, ceramics and jewellery, with a lot of it all made on site by the artisans that work there.

Poble Espanyol is also home to the Fran Daurel Museum which houses one of the best collections of contemporary are in Barcelona. Poble Espanyol welcomes around 1,000,000 visitors each year to enjoy its unique offering and has also been featured in films including Vicky Cristina Barcelona!

What you do at Poble Espanyol

Architecture

As Poble Espanyol is based on a collection of authentic villages from across the whole of Spain, you will set to see the different styles of architecture used in the various areas, which range from the Mudejar styles from the South of Spain to the medieval structures from the North. All the buildings have been recreated using the methods and styles used from the different areas, so it is a true collection of how the different areas of Spain are.

The village layout also mirrors a true Spanish town in that you will see the central squares the towns have, such as the the 'Plaza Mayor' which is normally where most of the central activities happen with performances and festivals. The various regions include Andalusia, Catalonia and the Basque Country.

Artisans and Wares

Part of the charm of Poble Espanyol is the artisans that work there and bring the place to life. The artisans offer numerous workshops for visitors to watch and enjoy and take part in. They show how their local crafts are done and include ceramics, textiles and metal work. They keep alive the traditions used in the past. Most also offer their products for sale, so can make great souvenirs.

Food

As well as the artisans making their wares, you will also find lots of bars and restaurants offering local and regional dishes as well. This means you can enjoy the various regional tapas dishes and see the difference in flavours from across Spain, including the classic paella from Valencia, pintxos from the Basque Country and delicious churros from Madrid!
