About the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC), Barcelona
The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya or 'MNAC' in Barcelona is located at the the foot of Montjuïc hill in an incredible Neo-Baroque palace called the 'Palau Nacional'.
The Palace was actually the main site of the Spanish exhibition at the World Fair of 1929 (the same fair that Poble Espanyol was created for) and after, the building was converted into the home of the MNAC Museum.
The museum is home to one of the world's most incredible collections of Romanesque mural paintings and includes works by artists including:
- Gaudi
- Casas
- Tiziano
- Velázquez
The collection includes modern art, sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints, photography, poster work, cinema, architecture as well as decorative arts and spans medieval Gothic art from as early as the 13th century all the way through to modern works.
The Modern gallery is large enough to be separated into 5 sections which include:
- The Rise of the Modern Artist
- Modernisme
- Noucentisme
- Art & Civil War
- The Avant-garde Revival of the Post-War Years
Their collection of Romanesque Art is widely considered to be one of the finest in the world as well as being home to countless sacred objects, some of which are also on show.
The museum also shows various exhibits throughout the year.

Monday: Closed | Tuesday 10:00 - 18:00 | Wednesday 10:00 - 18:00 | Thursday 10:00 - 18:00 | Friday 10:00 - 18:00 | Saturday 10:00 - 18:00 | Sunday 10:00 - 15:00
Please note the museum is actually free to enter from 15:00 on Saturdays and the first Sunday of each month. The rooftop bar can sometimes be closed dependent on weather. Refunds are not possible where this is the case.
