About Barcelona Cathedral
Built on the foundations of the Basilica and Romanesque Cathedral that previously stood there, construction of the current Barcelona Cathedral started in 1298 and was completed around the mid 15-century during the rule of King Alfonso V of Aragon.
The official title of the cathedral is the 'Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia' with Saint Eulalia being the co-patron saint of Barcelona.
The Cathedral Floor and Cloister
You can visit the Cloister of the Cathedral and the gardens with the fountain that are home to the 13 white geese that live at the cathedral.
The Rooftop
The rooftop is accessed via elevator. You can enjoy the incredible views of Barcelona from the roof. You can also see the two bell towers, the two lateral pinnacles, the cimborio crowned by the Holy Cross which helps to let natural light into the cathedral and you can look down on the cloister of the cathedral.
The Golden Fleece Choir Stalls
The incredibly intricate golden fleece choir stalls that are designed in a Catalan Gothic style. The shields were painted by Juan de Borgoña between 1517 & 1518 and represent the knights of the order of the Golden Fleece.
The Chapter Hall
Converted into a museum space, the Historic Chapter Hall was originally used as a soup kitchen for the poor. Now home to various art pieces and other artifacts for visitors to enjoy.
The Saint Christ of Lepanto's Chapel
Constructed in 1407 by Arnau Bargués, the chapel was actually the Chapterhouse until 1676 until Saint Olegarius was canonized and it became his mausoleum. The chapel is dedicated to worship and prayer.
The Bell Tower
The Bell Tower is one of the most recognizable features of the cathedral, known as the "Giralda." the Bell Tower on the Barcelona Cathedral stands at around 70 meters tall and offers panoramic views of the city.
The Crypt
The cathedral has a crypt underneath it where the relics of Saint Eulalia are kept and preserved. Visitors can see the crypt to pay their respects to the patron saint of Barcelona.
