About The Fundació Joan Miró Museum in Barcelona
The Fundació Joan Miró Museum in Barcelona showcases some of the iconic works of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Joan Miró, paying tribute to Miró's unique style which is marked by vibrant colours, dream like imagery, and a deep connection to his Catalan roots.
The museum is one of the most popular museums in Barcelona. The building was designed by a close friend of Miró, the famous architect Josep Lluis Sert and was opened in 1975 and is located on the famous Montjuïc Hill, which means it also offers amazing panoramic views of Barcelona. Sert designed the building to blend in with the surroundings, following Miró's own passion of creating a relationship between art and nature.
The museum owns a collection that covers most of Joan Miró's career from his early works that were influenced by Catalan landscapes, through to his later works when his mind was open to more expression.
Miró himself donated multiple pieces to the foundation. Amongst the collection are paintings, graphic works, textiles, ceramics and sketches. The museum also has a very popular garden space that shows multiple sculptures.
The museum isn't just for Miró's works though. Its also home to works by other artists and also regularly hosts different exhibitions throughout the year so return visitors can often enjoy different displays.
The works on show include:
- The Farm (La Masia) a painting that portrays the artist's family farmhouse in Mont-roig del Camp, Catalonia. It show Miro’s early style and showcases his deep attachment to his homeland.
- The Gold of Azure (L'or de l'atzur) is a large mural created by Miró exclusively for the museum's foundation and celebrates the spirit of creativity and freedom.
- Sculpture Garden - The museum has a wonderful outdoor sculpture garden which displays Miró's work and allows visitors to see the pieces in a natural setting.
- Mural Painting (Pintura Mural) is an amazing piece that spans an entire wall and features a dynamic blend of bold colours, abstract shapes, and symbolic elements that reflect Miró's surrealist aesthetic.
- Constellations (Constel·lacions) - A collection of 23small-scale paintings which show Miró's fascination with the cosmos.

About Joan Miró
Joan Miró was born 20 April 1893 in Barcelona and died 25 December 1983. He was a prominent Spanish surrealist painter and sculptor known using imaginative and symbolic elements in his works, along with playful use of colour, shapes and lines.
Miró had always shown a keen interest in art, even as a child, and on that basis he had attended art school at the 'Royal Academy of Fine Arts' of San Jorge in Barcelona from a young age and then moved on to the 'Gali Academy of Art'. His early influences were Fauvism, Cubism as well as Catalan folk art.
His Move to Paris
Miró moved to Paris in 1920 where he became involved with the Surrealist movement and would be introduced to Picasso, amongst others. During the 20's & 30's, Miró works are often considered as prime examples of Surrealism art.
He practised his art and experimented with different styles. He started to use specific colours to represent different things, with blue, red, yellow, black and green becoming synonymous with his works.
He also became known for his use of automation which is a technique where the artist allows their hand to move freely without a specific plan but simply following subconscious suggestions.
Sculptures & Ceramics
Miró would later move into working on sculpting and ceramics, which still involved similar whimsical and abstract qualities, like his paintings.
Return to Spain
Miró returned to Spain in 1940, partly due to World War II and the German occupation in France. Then during the mid 50's he moved to Palma de Mallorca.
It was in 1976 that his close friend, architect Josep Lluis Sert, would design what would be the Fundació Joan Miró Museum in order that the public could enjoy Miró's work.
Joan Miró sadly died in 1983 at the age of 90. However, his museum still allows visitors to enjoy his works.
