About Park Güell

Park Güell is in the 'Gràcia' district of Barcelona. Designed by the famous Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudi (also responsible for Sagrada Familia and several other popular tourist attractions in Barcelona), and is most famous for its fairy-tale like section called the 'Monumental Zone'.

What is the Park Güell Monumental Zone

Park Güell is set up in two areas:

  • The Forest Zone: covers 7 hectares and is free to access.
  • The Monumental Zone: covers 12 hectares (around 30 acres) and is the section of the park that requires a ticket to enter and is home to the famous Gaudi designs. Park Güell Monumental Zone is located between several neighbourhoods including El Coll, La Salut, Vallcarca I els Penitents, El Carmel and Can Baro.

The Monumental Zone includes the following attractions:

The Entrance and the Dragon Stairway

You can enter Park Güell through the famous Dragon Stairway which features the mesmerizing mosaic dragon (a symbol of Catalonia) and uncover the allure that this captivating entrance offers.

Learn about the Dragon Stairway's history and its role in setting the artistic tone for the wonders that lie beyond in the park and imagine Gaudi here during the design phase.

The Porters Lodge Pavilion

The Porters Lodge Pavilion is home to two gingerbread houses. One of the houses is used as the park's visitor centre and the other as the park's gift shop.

The Serpentine Bench

Winding around the main terrace you will find the Serpentine Bench which showcases Gaudí's mastery of organic forms, which he loved to include in his designs. This is one of the most photographed monuments in the park.

Look closely at the details of this undulating masterpiece which is around 110 meters long! Its unique design was aimed at fostering communal living when it was meant to be the garden city. See how the bench seamlessly integrates with the natural landscape and soak in the amazing panoramic views of Barcelona the spot offers.

The Hypostyle Room

At the heart of Park Güell is the Hypostyle Room, or sometimes referred to as the ‘Hall of a Hundred Columns’ even though it only has 86! A forest of 86 Doric columns which support the terrace above and was inspired by the Greek town of Delphi. The columns were designed to represent a forest and Gaudi had originally designed this area as a marketplace. It was often used for public events before it’s conversion to a park. You can explore the unique features that make the space a surreal and dreamlike architectural feature. Learn about the intricate mosaic ceiling that represent the four seasons along with the towering columns imitating a forest.

Mosaic Magic – The Trencadís Technique

Mosaic magic comes to life at Park Güell through Gaudí's 'trencadís' technique (a technique he also used in some of his properties such as Casa Batlló). Again, pay attention to the details of the meticulous craft that uses broken ceramic tiles to create vibrant and textured surfaces and see how the trencadís adds a burst of colour to the park's features, including the famous Salamander and the Portico of the Washerwoman! Gaudi designed everything with purpose.

The Salamander and the Portico of the Washerwoman

You can't visit Park Güell without marvelling at the colourful Salamander! A mosaic creature that guards the entrance and is known as 'the Dragon of Park Güell' and a major photograph hotspot. Discover the symbolism and significance behind this iconic symbol.

Journey to the Portico of the Washerwoman on the main terrace, again exploring the trencadís-covered columns and ceiling that transport you to a world of fantasy! The columns were all created by different artists to ensure no two are the same. One of the most famous is the 'Portico of the Washerwoman' and includes a sculpture of a woman carrying a basket on her head which is said to carry linen and clothes to be washed and so she has the nickname the 'Washerwoman'.

The Greek Theatre

Discover the Greek Theatre, a large open space which is surrounded by a circular bench. The space was designed for public events and performances. You can start to understand how Gaudí's vision of architecture which respects and celebrates the natural world comes to life in this picturesque venue. Uncover the seamless integration of the theatre into the hillside and its impact on the overall natural harmony of Park Güell.

Natural Harmony

Experience Gaudí's commitment to blending architectural elements with the natural environment. Explore the organic forms, the flowing lines, and nature-inspired colour palette that create harmony between man-made structures and the surrounding landscape.

The History of Park Güell

Sitting in the heart of Barcelona, Park Güell is a captivating testament to Antoni Gaudí's genius and Catalonia's vibrant spirit. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is not just a leisure space but a celebration of creativity and welcomes millions of visitors each year!

Early Vision and Construction (1900-1914)

Park Güell's (or Parc Güell depending on which way you spell it), story begins in the early 20th century when industrialist Eusebi Güell, who had already worked with Antoni Gaudi on other projects, commissioned him for a residential project. A private garden city of 60 luxury properties with the idea of it being a weekend escape for the Barcelona elite.

Gaudí, who was renowned for Catalan Modernism architecture, commenced the construction of the park in 1900.

The first plot to be sold was to a friend of Güell himself, a lawyer called Marti Trias I Domènech. Then, at the same time, Gaudi wanted to build a showhouse that would help encourage sales, so his assistant, Francesc Berenguer, designed one. It would be this property that Gaudi himself (along with is father and his niece) would move into in 1906. Gaudi went on to live in the property until his death in 1926 when he was hit by a tram in Barcelona city centre.

Eusebi Güell would also build a property, or redevelop an existing one that was on the site called ‘Casa Larrard’ which he converted into his own residence.

The Unfinished Dream

Despite its grand vision, and although construction had begun and various aspects of the park had already been completed, such as the Grand Staircase, the entrance and the Hypostyle Hall in 1907, the residential side of the project faltered with just two properties completed (Gaudi's House and Güell redeveloped property) and the project was then abandoned in 1914.

After the abandonment, Güell allowed the site to be used for public events and amazingly, it started to be featured in tourist guides for Barcelona.

After Eusebi died in 1918, his family offered the land to the city of Barcelona, who eventually agreed to purchase it. The park was signed over and became city property in 1923 and was later opened to the public as a park in 1926 and the rest, you could say is history!
