About Casa Vicens
Casa Vicens was commissioned by Manuel 'Vicens' i Montaner. It was completed in 1885 and marked the start of Gaudí's career.
It served as an important milestone in the development of modernist architecture and includes a blend of Moorish, Gothic, and Art Nouveau elements and like his other properties, shows his unique style.
Gaudí drew inspiration from different sources for Casa Vicens and it includes elements of traditional Catalan architecture, as well as influences from Islamic art and Japanese design.
The façade is covered with intricate ceramic tiles, colourful mosaics, and ornamental ironwork, all of which creates a visually stunning and unique exterior. Something that Gaudi went on to use in other properties including Casa Milà - La Pedrera and Casa Batlló, both also in Barcelona.
Casa Vicens had an extension built in 1925 that was designed by Joan Baptista Serra de Martinez, and then later on the garden that now surrounds the property was added.
It remained a private residence until 2014 when MoraBanc, a Andorran bank, aquired it. The bank completed an extensive restoration which took in to account that it was going to become a museum and cultural space, so they didn't want to impact the original design. A staircase and lift was added to make it more functional and accessible. It was opened to the public in 2017.
